A California man allegedly attacked his estranged wife at their 9-year-old son’s flag football game, attempting to take her life with a pair of butcher knives.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has charged Russell Matthew Husges, 43, of Anaheim, with attempted murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, disobeying a domestic relations court order, and child abuse and endangerment, according to a Tuesday press release.
Husges allegedly charged across a Garden Grove field, where he and his estranged wife’s son was playing flag football, on Friday, lunging at the victim. He was allegedly “holding two large butcher knives” as he attacked his former spouse, according to the press release.
The couple’s child, as well as an off-duty police officer and several spectators “intervened in the attack.”
The press release notes that the wife “had been granted a family court order against her estranged husband a few weeks prior to the attack.”
Husges is being held on a bond of $1,015,000. He is due back in court on June 3. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
“No one should be subjected to violence for making the decision to leave a relationship and no child should have to intervene to stop one parent from attacking another,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in a press release. “The act itself is horrific, but to attempt to carry out this kind of violence in front of innocent children and their parents is the stuff of nightmares.”
The district attorney’s office and local police have not responded to Oxygen.com’s request for comment.
