A shooting at a New Orleans graduation party Sunday killed a 12-year-old girl and injured two teenagers, according to authorities.
The girl, whose name has not been released, died at a local hospital, NOLA.com reported, citing the New Orleans Police Department.
She had been attending the outdoor event at a home in the Holy Cross neighborhood of the Louisiana city when the gunfire began at around 10:30 p.m. local time.
Officials have not released any information about any potential suspect or suspects.
“It’s very sad, it’s very tragic,” the police department’s superintendent, Shaun Ferguson, said Monday during a press conference.
Also hospitalized were the two other victims, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. Their names have not been released, but they were identified as men, ages 18 and 19.
Memorial Day Weekend saw three people killed and 13 injured across multiple shootings in the New Orleans area, according to NOLA.com.
Ferguson was unable to confirm whether the Holy Cross home where Sunday’s shooting occurred had been rented for the party.
A woman who lives next door to the home said her daughter called her from the party.
“She said, ‘They’re shooting, they’re shooting, they’re shooting, I’m scared!’ So I came rushing right back,” Karen Williams said, according to NOLA.com.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
