On Saturday evening Sallyann Ulibarri was found at Siegel Suites motel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with life-threatening injuries that eventually led to her death.
Police say the 30-year-old woman sent her two friends text messages the day of the brutal 12-hour domestic violence beating. According to KOB 4, she was found critically injured and barely breathing days before the incident took her life.
Detectives say Ulibarri tried to get help before the attack when she sent messages to friends indicating she was afraid of her boyfriend and almost died.
Sadly, one friend never replied back and another said she was busy with family. Ulibarri was found by the suites’ manager that day.
Albuquerque Journal reports, police found her:
“Lying on the bed, unresponsivehorribly bruised’ and struggling to breathe.”
Ulibarri was rushed to UNM Hospital where she was placed on life support. Her heart stopped Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities arrested her boyfriend Orlando Johnson, 27.
Johnson reportedly fled the motel after the attack. He was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated battery. Detectives expect to update the charge for Ulibarri’s murder.
According to RAINN, it often takes several attempts for a victim to leave a controlling abusive relationship. As a result of the abuse, most domestic violence victims feel very isolated and confused.
Amy Whitfield, Domestic Violence Resource Center spokesperson, told KOB 4, anytime a victim reaches out for help it should be taken seriously. She explained:
“A domestic violence victim is usually going to reach out, statistics tell us, 7-13 times before they actually leave a relationship.
So it may be people around them aren’t really sure that they want to leave at that time. So us as a community, we need to be open to responding every time someone is asking out for help.”
According to police records, the woman also texted a neighbor for help Saturday.
Friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover Ulibarri’s funeral costs.
