When progressive liberal Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided to adopt a pet, she chose to purchase a purebred French bulldog. These pooches are known for being cute and cuddly. However, their breeders are known for pumping out these dogs in horrible conditions that are almost nonhumane. These dogs require C-sections to be born and are likely going to require medical attention and prescription drugs to live to a ripe old age because of all the inbreeding breeders force upon these dogs to maintain their bizarre features like their flat face and bat-like ears.
PETA was outraged that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would buy a purebred French bulldog. Not only did she buy this dog from a breeder, but she also failed to support all the dogs struggling to survive inside animal shelters in both New York City and Washington, D.C.
Since Ocasio-Cortez is a leader in the progressive movement, she is held up as a role model for the way people should lead their lives. Despite being a young woman, many people turn to her when making monumental life decisions – including whether to adopt a dog from a shelter or shell out thousands of dollars to buy a pooch from a dog breeder who may or may not institute cruel practices like in-breeding and more.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a letter: “AOC had a chance to set a compassionate, responsible example in the face of the homeless-animal crisis, but instead, she apparently inadvertently contributed to the problem. PETA is urging her supporters not to follow her lead in this case and to stick up for the underdog by choosing to give a lovable mutt a new lease on life.”
When Ocasio-Cortez first got her dog, she decided to turn to social media to crowdsource names for the animal.
“He doesn’t have a name yet!” she said in one Instagram story. “We are thinking something Star Trek-related or Bronx/Queens/NYC/social good related.”
She wanted something cool and for people to feel involved in her life. However, she found herself fighting back against all the critics who lashed out regarding her decision to adopt a French bulldog rather than a dog from an animal shelter.
PETA wrote, “French bulldogs are inbred in order to produce ‘breed-specific traits,’ which cause health problems that many people who will be influenced by your purchase won’t be able to afford to address.”
Newkirk added: “With the millions of homeless dogs out there, you apparently chose to buy a purebred puppy instead of adopting one from an animal shelter. Right this minute, on Petfinder alone, there are more than 110,000 dogs – including French bulldogs – who need homes. Animal shelters are bursting at the seams with hundreds of thousands more, many of whom will be ‘put to sleep’ for lack of a home.”
Ocasio-Cortez kept on living and spoke about how needy her dog was.
“He’s good about his crate when we are right next to it, but he’s such a velcro pup that at night he whimpers if he’s not right next to us. We’re working on it!”
PETA was relentless in their attack.
“We’re asking that you please be a part of the solution to ending the cat- and dog-overpopulation crisis and consider setting the right example for your millions of followers by adopting a mutt and encouraging them to do the same.”
