After receiving the message, Gardner went to meet his girlfriend of several weeks, who was sitting on a bench that he would soon discover was a mile from the crime scene.
According to KXLY, Gardner said:
Long story short, I picked her up because I felt something was off.”
People reports the mother of two proceeded to show Gardner a news story saying she was wanted by police. She reportedly confessed to the murder of Christina Powell, the 48-year-old mother of her ex and the grandmother of her young daughter.
Gardner recalled:
It was a stressful situation and I said, ‘We’re going to turn you in,’ and then she agreed.”
As People reports, Gardner said the police arrived within a minute of his call. Horning allegedly told police she tossed the gun she used to kill Powell in the Spokane River.
Gardner said:
Knowing her personally, that wasn’t something that she would normally be capable of, or want to do.”
Horning was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and is being held on a $1 million bond.
While in prison, Horning told KHQ about the events leading up to the shooting. She revealed the gun she used in the murder belonged to a friend she’d been staying with and she took it when he’d left for work.
Horning said:
I don’t remember it and I’m so sorry to everyone I disappointed, especially my daughters.”
Gardner described Horning as anxious and depressed. He also pointed out that she wanted custody of her two children, who were staying with their fathers.
She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
