IF you’re worried about your bikini body, spare a thought for this woman – whose strange holiday snap has sent the internet into meltdown.
The image, which was shared on Reddit, shows a cocktail-sipping woman with a braided blonde floating head and long legs – but seemingly no body.
The optical illusion is driving people wild – as they try to work out exactly what caused the strange effect.
Commenting on the thread, Chucklehead said: “Can someone tell me what exactly happened here? I never said I was a smart man yet somehow you people are still disappointed.”
What is refraction?
* Light and sound waves change speed when they pass from one material to another, e.g. from air to water or glass.
* This causes the waves to change direction, and this effect is called refraction.
* This effect can cause things to appear to be in a different place to where they actually are.
* For example, a fisherman might think a fish is slightly more to the left or right than its actual position.
* Or it could cause an object, in this case the woman’s body, to momentarily disappear.
To which High On Tacos replied: “Refraction. When light leaves/enters water, it is bent, travelling in a different direction to your eye.
“What you see from this low camera angle is what you’d see from a much steeper camera angle, if the water were not there.”
Master Hooman added: “When the light leaves the water at a high enough angle it will begin to reflect.”
In case you’ve forgotten your school studies, this simple tutorial by Make Me Genius explains how refraction works.
