RALEIGH, N.C. (WAVY) — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is reporting 2,253 cases of COVID-19 Wednesday afternoon — the second consecutive day of cases above 2,000.
During the COVID-19 briefing, Governor Roy Cooper announced he signed an Executive Order preventing evictions in North Carolina for those who can’t afford the rent.
“Roughly 300,000 to 400,000 households across North Carolina are currently unable to pay rent,” said Cooper.
He says the Order builds on the CDC’s federal eviction moratorium. It also requires landlords to ensure tenants are aware of the CDC protections and how to claim them.
“This Order makes it clear that the CDC moratorium applies to all eligible North Carolinians, not just those who live in federally subsidized housing. And it ensures that recipients of North Carolina’s HOPE program are still able to qualify for these protections,” Cooper continued.
The NC Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) Program program started two weeks ago which provides renters who are at 80% or less of the median income of a county with up to six months back rent and utility payments. For more information, call 2-1-1 or visit nc211.org/hope.
