Authorities are asking for the public’s help after a grim discovery was made in Troup County, Georgia.
According to 11 Alive, Troup County officers were called to Boy Scout Road around 3:20 p.m. on January 6, after a witness discovered a brightly colored rollaway cooler left on the side of the road near the end of a wooded area.
Inside the cooler, which sports pictures of watermelon slices on it, was the body of a deceased newborn infant.
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office, Sargeant Stewart Smith, said in a press release:
“Once on scene deputies and investigators discovered what appeared to be a deceased newborn child in a portable cooler bag.”
After police revealed what was found inside of the cooler, witnesses who had driven past it said that the cooler had been sitting on the side of the road for several days to a week.
As the Atlanta Constitutional Journal reports, an autopsy is expected to take place on Tuesday, January 8 in order to determine how the baby died.
Who the baby belonged to has yet to be determined.
Troup County Police described the cooler as:
Light blue in color with pictures of watermelon slices and zips at the top and on the front and sides.
