Rialto, CA – Rialto police released bodycam footage of the officer-involved shooting of a knife-wielding man who tried to attack three police officers and stabbed one in the abdomen (video below).
The incident occurred at about 6:21 a.m. on Nov. 6 after officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting at the USA Gasoline station in the 200-block of East Foothill Boulevard, KTLA reported.
Two police vehicles responded to the scene and those officers were investigating the reported shooting a man approached on of the police cars, KTTV reported.
Surveillance video from the gas station showed the suspect – later identified as 26-year-old David Viveros of San Bernardino – immediately attacked the officer as he got out of his car to talk to him.
The other two officers raced over to help the first officer who was engaged in a hand-to-hand struggle with the armed suspect.
“A Taser was deployed twice during the altercation but was ineffective, and the suspect continued to lunge at officers with the knife,” Rialto Police Chief Mark King said on the video posted to social media by the police department on Sunday evening.
Videos of the encounter show that Viveros dropped his knife but quickly recovered it from the ground at least once during the struggle.
The chief said Viveros stabbed the officer in the stomach during the attack, KTLA reported.
“After the officer was stabbed, another officer fired several rounds at the subject who ultimately died from those injuries,” Chief King said in the video.
He said two officers were transported to the hospital with injuries after Viveros’ attack.
The chief said one of the officers remained in the hospital recovering from his stab wound
Chief King has not yet released the name of any of the officers involved in the incident, KTTV reported.
Authorities said that they didn’t think Viveros had any connection to the shooting that the Rialto police had originally responded to at the gas station and that they believe the attack was random.
