Apparently, conservatives are not the only group of people outraged with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the firecracker freshman representative from New York City. Because the politician has gotten a new puppy, a purebred French bulldog, some animal rights activists are blowing their lid. The freshman Representative of The Bronx and Queens shared an announcement on Sunday, declaring that she and her boyfriend Riley Roberts named their new puppy, “Deco” after the art deco movement that shaped Miami and many other parts of the country including her home town of New York City.
“Deco’s personality has really emerged in the last day or two,” she wrote on social media. “Now that he’s more comfortable and confident at home. He’s a playful, observant, sensitive, and affectionate boy.”
Ocasio-Cortez continued her loving rant about the puppy as follows, “As we took him for a walk and discussed it, a neighbor suggested we name him after an artist. We loved that idea and decided to name him after one of Riley and my favorite design styles: Art Deco. Which is also inspired by themes of optimism and social and technological progress, and is a fixture in iconic NYC architecture.”
Ever since AOC got her new puppy, she’s been stewing over what to name him. She originally posted about his lack of a name and said that she and Riley would probably choose something that was “Star Trek related or Bronx/Queens/NYC/social good related.”
But when the neighbor suggested naming the dog after an artist, Ocasio-Cortez’s brain started spinning. She knew that was a great idea and decided to name the puppy after the style of architecture that gave us The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Radio City Music Hall, and ’30 Rock’ among other iconic New York City landmarks.
Ocasio-Cortez revealed the new name of the dog on Instagram after she posted some new pictures of the dog out for a walk in Washington, D.C., where he is very popular among the people.
As temperatures soared to 70 degrees in Washington on Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez spent it outdoors with her new puppy – but not without reminding people about how these swinging temperatures affect farmers and the food chain.
However, this new puppy has stricken the wrong chord with animal rights group PETA. They have accused the congresswoman of buying a purebred puppy instead of getting a rescue dog. I guess you can’t please everyone, no matter how progressive your politics.
“With the millions of homeless dogs out there, you apparently chose to buy a purebred puppy instead of adopting one from an animal shelter,” the PETA letter said. President Ingrid Newkirk of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals signed the letter.
At first, Ocasio-Cortez ignored the letter, but as the heat grew, it became impossible to ignore.
Newkirk said, “French bulldogs are inbred in order to produce ‘breed-specific traits,’ which cause health problems that many people who will be influenced by your purchase won’t be able to afford to address.”
Do you think Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was wrong to buy the purebred puppy?
