51-year old teacher’s assistant Tedria Fluellen has been accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student over a period of a year.
The boy told investigators that he and Fluellen had known
each other for several years. They attended the same church and he would
sometimes visit Fluellen’s home to help out with various chores. The boy
alleges that the abuse began at her home, according to court documents.
Fluellen had sex with the boy four times, including once in her car in the school parking lot, once in her storage unit, and at her home, according to reports.
The boy also told police that Fluellen sent him “sexually explicit”
texts, including one that called him “my secret lover.”
The abuse was initially reported by the boy’s grandmother after
she found sexually explicit messages on his cell phone.
Fluellen denied “sexual penetration” in an interview with police, but admitted to performing oral sex on the boy.
“We are aware that a former HISD employee has been arrested
and charged. We are cooperating fully with the Harris County District
Attorney’s office. Keeping our students and campuses safe so that productive
instruction can take place remains the district’s top priority,” said the Houston
Independent School District in the statement after the accusations came to
light.
Fluellen is currently in jail on a $40,000 bond. At the bail hearing, the magistrate called Fluellen’s behavior a “public safety issue.”
When I’m not hanging out with my three-year-old and husband in Brooklyn, I’m busy writing stories for Mamas Uncut and managing PR + Marketing for Magnolia Bakery, based in New York City. On weekends, you can usually find me at a local park or playground pushing my daughter on the swings, “researching” the best almond croissants in Park Slope or launching into impromptu family dance parties at home, the sidewalk or, every once in awhile, a restaurant bathroom. I’m still trying to master the whole parenting thing, but I have learned that copious amounts of coffee, humor and humility are involved on a daily basis.
