‘Wife Swap’ Cast Member Charged With Murder of Mom and Brother After Surviving Suicide Attempt

In June 2017, then-25-year-old Jacob Stockdale was accused of killing his 54-year-old mother and 21-year-old brother.

He also attempted to take his own life by turning the gun on himself but survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Stark County, Ohio, family may look similar to some because of their time on ABC’s “Wife Swap” years ago:

The Stockdale family was best known for their musical talents and for their very strict lifestyle.

As Dearly previously reported, the “devoutly religious” family wasn’t allowed to watch television or play video games. The parents, Kathryn and Tim Stockdale, said it was their “moral responsibility to censor all that their kids watch and listen to.”

According to WKYC, on June 15, 2017, the Stark County Police Department responded to the Stockdale residence after receiving a “hang up” call before 5 p.m. that afternoon.

After giving verbal commands and not receiving a response, authorities heard one final gunshot.

Police then found Kathryn and 21-year-old James Stockdale deceased inside the home. Jacob was still alive and later flown to Cleveland’s MetroHealth Medical Center, where he would survive his injuries.

As TMZ reported, over a year after allegedly shooting his mother and brother, Jacob was formally charged with two counts of murder.

Stark County Prosecutor John Ferrero told TMZ that they will not be seeking the death penalty in this specific case.

TMZ also reported that it took nearly a year and a half to formally charge Jacob because prosecutors “feared they’d have to cover the cost of Jacob’s extensive medical care — including facial reconstruction — if they’d have taken him into custody earlier.”

A motive as to why Jacob would kill his mother and brother continues to remain unclear.

Calvin Stockdale, the oldest brother, released this statement to the media in 2017:

My family appreciates the prayers and support we are receiving from our friends and the community. We are mourning the loss of my brother and mother and are waiting to learn more about what transpired yesterday afternoon. While support is appreciated, we ask for privacy as the family deals with this tragic loss.

Jacob, James, their father, and occasionally their oldest brother made up the rather popular bluegrass band known as the “Stockdale Family Band.”
