A Black family searching for answers after a young woman was pronounced dead at a hospital after being transported there from an Indiana jail has hired the legal team for Breonna Taylor’s family to aid in the quest.
“Our team has been given the privilege of seeking truth and justice for the family of Ta’Neasha Chappell,” Louisville attorney Sam Aguiar wrote on Facebook on Wednesday, July 21. “More to come ASAP.

Indiana State police are investigating after 23-year-old Chappell, of Louisville, Kentucky, who died after being transported from the Jackson County Jail to the Schneck Memorial Hospital on July 16.
Chappell was arrested on May 26 on charges of resisting arrest, escaping law enforcement causing bodily injury, and theft after reportedly shoplifting at an Edinburgh, Indiana, outlet mall and leading police on a high-speed chase that spanned three counties and at times reached speeds of 100 miles per hour before ending in a collision after 30 minutes. Authorities say more than $3,200 in stolen merchandise was found in Chappell’s car.
Chappell was being held on $4,007 bond. Her family says she seemed to be in good health when they spoke a day before her death, but said she was having issues with other inmates. Chappell’s mother Lavita McCain told WDRB she suggested her daughter ask the guards to move her to a different cell.
“She called numerous times — over and over saying that ‘they are going to kill me. Get me out of here,’” said McCain, who allegedly has not been able allowed to verify her daughter’s body. An autopsy has been performed, and investigators are awaiting the results.
“We don’t anticipate any further statements until investigators receive the autopsy and toxicology results, which typically takes several days or longer,” a state police spokesman said.
Chappell’s family told WHAS11 News that a detective informed them that she had died, but provided little information, saying only that she complained of feeling sick before an ambulance was called. Chappell had been vomiting and feverish on Thursday, then was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. on Friday before the family was informed at around 8:30 p.m.
“I believe they neglected her. They neglected her need, [and] protection. She spoke to me numerous times — phone calls, telling me they were going to kill her in there,” her sister Ronesha Murrell said, questioning why her sister wasn’t taken to a hospital sooner.
“How do you not seek medical attention right then and there?” she asked.
Chappell leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. A GoFundMe started by the family to cover expenses has raised $4,000.
Louisville lawyer Lonita Baker and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are also a part of the team hired by Chappell’s family, Aguiar said. The trio secured a $12 million settlement for Breonna Taylor’s family from the city of Louisville last year following her March 2020 death.
Body Found In Wooded Area of Orlando Confirmed To Be Missing 19-Year-Old Miya Marcano
The Orange County Medical Examiner has confirmed that a body found in a wooded area of Orlando over the weekend is that of missing 19-year-old Miya Marcano.
“A positive identification of a female whose body was recovered in a wooded area on October 2, 2021 has been identified as Miya Marcano,” Orange and Osceola Counties Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Stephany said in a statement.
“This case is currently under active law enforcement investigation and any further requests for information, including cause and manner of death, will be deferred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.”
Daryl K. Washington the attorney representing Marcano’s family, told the Orlando Sentinel that the news was “very tough” for the family to hear. “It’s just a really sad situation of what this young lady went through.”
A spokesman for Washington criticized the sheriff’s office’s response to the case, telling the paper that investigators didn’t treat Marcano’s disappearance with the proper urgency. The sheriff’s office is scheduled to meet with the media later Wednesday.
The attorney also released a new video of an encounter between Miya’s family and the prime suspect Armando Caballero. The cell phone video was taken on Sept. 25, the day after Marcano’s disappearance.
“You have sent obsessive texts to Miya,” a family member said to Caballero in the video. “We have all seen the texts. You talked about giving her your life savings. You Cash App’ed her money and you claim you weren’t in touch.”
At one point Caballero responds: “It’s not only from my side. So, don’t try to make this like I’m a stalker.”
As previously reported by Oxygen.com, Marcano was last seen on Sept. 24 at the Arden Villas Luxury Apartments in Orlando where she lived and worked in the leasing office. She was expected to fly to Fort Lauderdale that night to visit family, but never showed up.
Caballero, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex, was a person of interest in her disappearance. He was found dead of an apparent suicide on Sept. 27, investigators said.
He had expressed romantic interest in Marcano, but his advances were rebuffed, according to Orange County Sheriff John Mina.
Mina said Caballero is the only suspect in the case and authorities believe he was “responsible for the crime.”
As previously reported by Oxygen.com, authorities believe Caballero used a master key to enter Marcando’s apartment about 30 minutes before she was scheduled to leave work.
Washington questioned the thoroughness of a background check on Caballero during an interview with WESH.
“A basic background check would show this guy had some hits on his record,” he told the station.
Washington told the Orlando Sentinel that he and the family are looking into possible legislation about security at apartment complexes to prevent future tragedies.
Residents of Arden Villas are planning protest on Wednesday to bring attention to their safety concerns, the Sentinel reported.
Washington said many current and former residents have told him about bad experiences at the apartment complex, including a woman who repeatedly complained about Caballero but was “basically ignored,” according to the Sentinel.
A petition with a list of demands for Arden Villas at Change.org has more than 27,000 signatures, according to Spectrum News 13.
Some of those demands include more security, better lighting around apartments and more surveillance cameras on buildings.
Woman Steals Car with 5 Children Still Inside When Driver Stops to Help After a Crash
A Virginia woman allegedly stole the car of a person who pulled over to help her after she crashed.
Markell Hancox of Chesapeake, Virginia, stole a man’s Suburban with his five children still inside the car after he had stopped when he witnessed a “multi-vehicle collision,” the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook press release.
The collision took place on Oct. 3 around 12:40 p.m. in Grandy, North Carolina, according to the Sheriff’s office.
“A citizen stopped to assist, as he witnessed the event. He approached the scene and exited his vehicle to check on the people involved,” the sheriff’s office said.
After he had exited the car, Hancox “jumped into the driver seat of his Suburban and stole it with his 5 children still inside,” the sheriff’s office said.
She drove the car north on Caratoke Highway before pulling over into the lot of the Hop Inn, “where she jumped and ran,” the sheriff’s office said.
Hancox was “quickly apprehended” by Currituck Sheriff’s deputies.
“The children were extremely shaken, but not harmed,” the sheriff’s office said.
Hancox has been charged with five counts of second degree kidnapping, leaving the scene of an accident and larceny of a motor vehicle. She was booked into the Currituck County Detention Center with a $210,000 bond.
It was not immediately clear if Hancox has legal representation or if she has entered a plea.
Pregnant Tx. Woman and New Boyfriend Were Murdered When Ex Ran Them Down with Truck
A Texas man has pleaded guilty to murdering his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend by intentionally crashing his truck into their trailer.
On Oct. 1, David Joshua Reed, 41, pleaded guilty to murder for the December 2020 slayings of 23-year-old Shelby Duarte and 43-year-old Timothy Nelson, KLTV, the Longview News-Journal and KYTX report.
Reed was initially charged with capital murder but accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to two lesser charges, the outlets report. He will serve two life sentences in prison.
According to authorities, on Dec. 9, 2020, in the middle of the night, Reed intentionally drove his truck off the road and into a camper trailer the new couple was living in together.
The trailer was located on Nelson’s family property, according to an arrest warrant obtained by KLTV and the News-Journal. When Nelson’s family went outside to see what had happened, they found the couple had been thrown more than 65 feet from the trailer and hit the front of their home. Nelson died on impact while Duarte was still breathing. Authorities airlifted her to a hospital, where she succumbed to injuries.
Through their investigation, authorities learned Duarte had been having troubles with her ex. When they made contact with him, Reed claimed he was upset because Duarte was pregnant and confessed to driving into the trailer at high speed to murder both the couple and himself, authorities say.
“Reed told affiant he wanted to kill himself as well, so he loaded up the front seat of his truck with propane bottles, believing the crash would blow him up,” the warrant stated, KLTV reports. “Reed explained he did not care anymore and also knew he would be killing his unborn child.”
Before driving into the trailer, Reed left a voicemail on Duarte’s phone saying, “You reap what you sow, I will see you in hell.”
During the hearing, the court heard from the victims’ families, including Tabitha Hall, Duarte’s niece who addressed Reed directly in her victim impact statement.
“I want you to know for myself I have to forgive you because I don’t want that poison that you have to come into me, so if I don’t forgive you today, that’s what will happen,” Hall said. “Because of your impulsive act of pure rage and evil and stupidity, you took two lives from us, but you didn’t take them from us because they live forever in eternity.”
