Someone Created A Chair For People Who Love To Sit Cross-Legged At Their Desk

by San Eli News

I don’t know about you, but I always find it more comfortable to sit cross-legged. However, sitting in this posture for a long time can often make my legs hurt, due to the restricted blood flow.

But don’t you worry if you are like me, as there are people that work tirelessly to ease our everyday living in every way possible! Yup.. there is a chair that will make sitting cross-legged much more relaxing and less painful!

The ingenious creation known as Soul Seat by the American company Ikaria Design Company (formerly Health By Design) is a unique piece of furniture!

It features an adjustable top perch, a lower platform where you can fold or cross your legs, and detachable legs if you want to place the seat on the floor.

Therefore, it allows you to sit with one leg up, in a kneeling or squatting position, as it is basically like sitting on a floor but on a chair. The small family-run business is located in Columbia, Missouri, and it “ designs and builds handmade furniture for folks that want to stay active as they work.”

According to their website, “those who tend to sit cross-legged at their workstations and prefer sitting on the floor at home” are among their most avid fans.

The company explained that it helps to improve posture as it “tilts the pelvis forward, opens the hips, and lets the spine align to a comfortable, neutral position”.

Many argued that it would have been perfect if it had a back and armrest, but the company explained that it was purposely made without them because it’s designed to “support our healthy body’s daily dance with gravity.”

The company’s website reads:

“Designer and founder, Pack Matthews, was frustrated with how conventional ergonomic chairs left him in pain and offered no options for changing position while working at the computer. Collaborating with friends, a physical therapist, yoga instructors, fine woodworkers, and industrial engineers, Pack developed Health by Design’s first product, the Soul Seat.”

Together with a few friends, he designed the unique chair, and due to the innovative design, it has been registered with the US Patent Office. The price of the regular Soul Seat is $980, and the Bamboo Soul Seat retails at $1,325.

You can choose between two material options: Primera and Pendleton wool (+250), and several colors: black, chalk, merlot, blueprint, grey, marine, and doe.

Plus, the wooden leg of the Bamboo Soul Seat comes in three colors – amber, natural, and wheat.

Additionally, the company makes its products with local craftspeople, so they are “ able to respond to customer’s desires for customization. “

Before he came up with the chair, Matthews had been trying out yoga, and he’d been an ‘Average Eddy’ at it. Yet, the Soul Seat has helped him do poses that he never tried out before.

“With this product, Pack’s dream of never needing a conventional chair again became a reality. Now he starts his day on his yoga mat, switching to work on the computer, and ending the day stretching on the yoga mat before bed without ever having to use a conventional chair.”

Therefore, his target audience constituted mainly of yogis and Malaysians who love to Bersila (sit cross-legged).

A Malaysian artist, AzyanDraws, posted a photo of the seat on her Twitter, and it immediately went viral, with people being fascinated by the invention!

I can relate!

The company adds:

“Our purpose is to design movement back into our daily work even as our computers gobble up more and more of our physical effort. Our chairs and floor desks are designed to help computer engineers stay active even as their coding makes wires evaporate into the cloud.

Our furniture allows the student, the accountant, the videographer to move their legs and pelvis while their attention remains riveted to the monitor. We also want to see our health leverage the cloud by having the workplace be as flexible as our networks. We want to make it as easy to move tasks to the floor, and back to a table, and then on to a standing position as easily as possible.”

Awesome!
