A Portland man named Dominique DeWeese has filed a $350,000 lawsuit against a local gas station claiming that an attendant denied selling him gas over the summer due to his race.
The man who is Black has filed his lawsuit against Jay’s Garage and said in his lawsuit that he had visited the place in July to fill up a gas canister for his lawnmower.
In a video that was obtained at the location, Dominique was seen asking the attendant as to why he wouldn’t sell him gas. The White attended told him that, “There’s dumpster fires, they get a can of gasoline and they start the fire.”
The man claimed in his lawsuit that the attendant did not want to give him gas as he could set fire or commit other crimes that had occurred at night protests in the city. Some demonstrators had set fire in the streets or inside buildings during the protests.
DeWeese told the station that, “He was assuming that I’m somebody that I’m not.”
The attendant said that he would only sell him gas if that was directly put into his car or the land mower. Deweese who is the director of volunteer recruitment for the Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program for students between kindergarten and 12th grade told the papers that he was offended by this situation.
