Friends told law officials that the couple had been experiencing problems in their marriage for a number of years.
According to the Des Moines Register, the two had gotten married in 2004 and have three children together.
Authorities said that months prior to her death, Amy told a friend that if she was found dead:
“…you’ll know Todd did something to me.”
Another friend also reported to detectives that Amy felt “trapped and like a prisoner.”
An investigator with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said the couple “had not slept in the same bed for five months” leading up to her death.
In 2013, Todd discovered Amy was having an affair with a different man. According to charging documents, he told police that “shattered his trust of Amy.”
In July, Todd approached his wife about cheating again.
Her most recent lover told detectives that Amy wanted to leave Todd, but was “scared to death” of him.
The Iowa Public Safety Department said that Todd Mullis had called 911 and said no one had seen what happened — that her death was unattended.
The department says an autopsy report has since listed the manner of her death as homicide. https://t.co/gbJKeYXNgo pic.twitter.com/96CMYhnmAn

According to a criminal complaint, at one point he said Amy told him:
“If he catches me, he might make me disappear.”
Court records show that in October, Amy reportedly called a friend screaming and crying that Todd had found out about her affair.
And as WBAL11 reports, days before Amy’s murder, Todd had allegedly searched “killing unfaithful women” and “what happened to cheating spouses in historic Aztec tribes” on his iPad.
According to the Des Moines Register, on the day of Amy’s death, Todd called 911. He told police that his son found Amy on their farm with her back impaled on a corn rake.
Todd reportedly removed the rake from Amy’s back and attempted to drive her to the hospital in his pick up truck. However, along the way to the hospital, she was transferred to an ambulance.
Doctors at Manchester medical center pronounced her deceased.
Despite her husband’s story, an autopsy revealed that Amy’s wounds were not consistent with a fall, but rather with being stabbed multiple times.
Todd remains in police custody on a first-degree murder charge without bail.
