Nythia Davis and Mckeniva Mortimer are nursing their bruises after being battered on the job.
“We probably got the short end of the stick, because this guy hit us. I mean, it was a guy,“ said Davis.
“I remember falling. I remember seeing his foot, I don’t remember it connecting,“ said Mortimer.
It happened at the Cold Stone Creamery on Lee Airpark Drive in Edgewater Saturday night.
Police got the call just before 7:30 p.m. for a report of an assault.
Investigators say a man and woman entered the store and were asked by employees there to put on a mask.
A sign on the door reads, “No mask, no service,“ as part of the governor’s executive orders.
“We’ve been in this pandemic since March. I mean, I don’t understand how people at this point haven’t gotten used to the fact that it is our new norm,“ said Davis.
But the employees say when the couple was asked to put on their mask and argument escalated to violence after they were told to leave the store or police will be called.
Mortimer said it began with a push from the woman, then punches from the man.
“I remember he looked me directly in my face as if, ‘Really?’ And he hit me harder and harder. I don’t remember when he finished hitting me,“ said Mortimer.
“After the first punch from him, I don’t remember much. After that I was in a daze,“ said Davis.
Paramedics rushed Davis to the hospital with several injuries, including a broken nose and cheekbone.
“He’s a heathen, period. He has no home training. He has no respect for women,“ said Mortimer.
Police say the suspects got away in a silver Nissan Altima. Investigators said they have surveillance video of the incident but they’re not releasing it to the public yet.
