For three years, the mom looked the other way while a man regularly molested her young daughter.
As KOSA News reports, 36-year-old Shirley Harmon of Ector County, Texas, allegedly knew that 62-year-old Gary Landreth was abusing her daughter. In fact, she accepted money from Landreth in exchange for access to the young girl.
According to the Odessa American, the abuse began in 2017, when the girl was only 2 years old. The last incident was on January 7 of this year.
The girl, who is now 5, has since been rescued and removed from her home. In a forensic interview at the Harmony Home Child Advocacy Center, the girl described how Landreth had touched her inappropriately. A medical exam confirmed that the girl had been sexually assaulted.
In an interview with authorities, Harmon admitted that her daughter told her about Landreth — that he hurt her and touched her inappropriately. However, the mom ignored her daughter’s cry for help and continued to let Landreth spend time with the girl.
She explained that Landreth had paid her $400 for the opportunity to molest her daughter.
Landreth was charged with the sexual assault of a child on January 14. His bond was set at $50,000, and he has since posted bail.
Harmon has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child as well as endangering a child (for her failure to report Landreth). Her bond has been set at $50,000, and she remains in custody.
