A judge sentenced a Kansas man to life in prison for raping a 7-year-old girl in a stranger’s condo just six weeks after he was released from prison for another rape.
The Wichita Eagle reports that the case was heard by Judge Joe Kisner on November 13. Prosecutors said sex offender Corbin Breitenbach, who had been previously convicted for violent sex crimes in 2013, brutally attacked and raped the child in June 2017.
The girl, now 9, described the attempted murder and sexual assault that occurred while spending the night at a friend’s condo in Wichita. In a recorded victim impact statement, she said:
“I don’t like talking about happened that night. It was scary for me.
The things you did to me …”
Prosecutors said Breitenbach broke into the Wichita apartment and choked the girl unconscious before sodomizing and raping her — leaving the child severely injured.
As KWCH reports, the 24-year-old defendant, who represented himself, plead not guilty. He said:
“I’m 24 years old, I have an IQ of 140, I represent myself. You caught the right one because I’m going to fight this until I die. It’s not a matter of if it’s a matter of when.”
Judge Kisner, however, said the evidence against him was substantial, including that Breitenbach’s DNA was discovered inside the child.
Kisner then gave Breitenbach a life sentence for rape, attempted capital murder, aggravated burglary, and aggravated criminal sodomy.
District Attorney Marc Bennett said Breitenbach was deserving of life in prison without the possibility of parole:
“Crimes like this deserve a profound punishment and people with this kind of history deserve to be treated as such.”
The victim also said in the video before the judge read Breitenbach’s sentencing:
“Nobody would tell me what happened that night for a long time. Now, I know what happened but I don’t understand.”
Her family, who also spoke during the sentencing hearing said the 9-year-old is often afraid to sleep in her own bed at night.
Describing her attack in a song, the young sexual assault victim sang, “Here I stand, still alive.”
