Man Allegedly Takes Bus Ride With Suitcases Of Girlfriend’s Body Parts, ‘Wanted To Be With At Least Part of Her’

by San Eli News

A Kentucky man is accused of murdering his girlfriend before bringing suitcases filled with her dismembered body parts with him on an interstate bus ride to visit his mother.

The mom of Melvin Martin Jr., 30, allegedly discovered some of his girlfriend’s remains in his luggage on Tuesday as he was visiting them in Markham, Illinois, according to local outlet WLS.

Markham Police Chief Terry White told WBBM-TV that Martin brought a few bags with him and there was a “foul odor coming from the bags.” Despite packing multiple bags, he kept asking relatives for clothing to borrow.

Curious, Martin’s mother opened up one of the pieces of luggage while Martin was out, only to allegedly make a gruesome discovery, CBS Chicago reports.

She contacted the police after she discovered a body part.

“I just took him to [the] library and I said, let me see what’s in this suitcase,” she told the 911 dispatcher, according to the report.

The victim’s head and other remains were found in the other bags. However, it only added up to be about half of her.

The victim is believed to be Martin’s 31-year-old girlfriend, who has not yet been named. Investigators think she was killed about a month ago during a domestic dispute, Fox23 reports.

During an interview, Martin allegedly instructed investigators in Kentucky where to find the rest of his girlfriend. A torso was retrieved in a park on Wednesday as a result, CBS Chicago reports.

A possible motive for the killing has not been disclosed — though White did offer some insight into why Martin allegedly traveled with parts of the victim.

“He indicated that, as grotesque as it might sound, that he still wanted to be with at least part of her,” White said, according to CBS Chicago.

Martin is expected to be extradited back to Kentucky to face charges. He reportedly has former domestic abuse arrests. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer at this time.
