Infant Found Dead After 23-Year-Old Father Forgot He Put His Child in the Bathtub

The father of a 5-month-old drew a bath for his son, placed him in water, then left the boy unattended to play a video game.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release, Cordarius Cotton remembered his son was still in the tub about an hour later. He returned to the bathroom and found him unresponsive.

Police responded to an emergency call at the 23-year-old’s home — the 5-month-old wasn’t breathing.

Emergency responders rushed the infant to the hospital, but by that time, it was too late.

The boy was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the hospital. Cordarius’ baby boy drowned in the tub.

The 23-year-old faces a reckless manslaughter charge in his son’s death and was jailed on a $15,000 bond.

Monday, a coroner identified the infant as Dezmond Cotton, reports WIAT.

The Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian said in a written press release according to WIAT:

“I can’t imagine how hard this is going to be on that child’s family. This will be heart wrenching for all involved. God be with them.”

The child’s mother was not present in the home at the time of the incident.

The two other children living at the Birmingham residence have been placed with their grandparents for the time being, reports AL.
