A Pennsylvania mother of four dropped an order of protection against her husband just days before he allegedly shot her in their home.
Kyra Haley, 24, was shot to death on October 20 in the home she shared with her husband, Dallas Haley, 26, according to PennLive. Court records now reveal that she was thinking of leaving him and that she had feared for her life.
She was even taking steps to get away from him. Haley was granted an order of protection against Dallas last month which would have evicted him from their Harrisburg home, Penn Live reports. However, Haley called court officials to drop it just days ahead of a Sept. 16 hearing between the two.
While it’s not clear what prompted the order, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence states that “leaving an abuser is the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence.”
The order of protection arose from a Sept. 3 incident in which he broke glass, leaving dangerous shards around.
“He said he would do the same thing to me,” Haley wrote in the petition for the order, according to Pennlive. “I don’t feel safe with him.”
She had been fearing for her life since at least earlier this year.
“I don’t know what to do,” she said in a text to a relative back in April, obtained by PennLive. “He will literally tell me he’ll kill me and my kids if I ever try to leave.”
Dallas was convicted of assault against Haley twice in the past. One one occasion in 2016 he threatened to beat her up if she didn’t help him find his Xanax pills.
He was arrested the day of Haley’s fatal shooting, local outlet WHTM reported. He has since been charged with criminal homicide. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
Haley is being remembered as a kind person and a caring mom.
“She was an amazing mom,” her sister Kori Seiler told PennLive. “Those children were always clean and full.”
Haley lost her own mother to heart disease when she was just 12.
“I know there were nights she cried to him and opened herself to him regarding the pain of losing our mother,” Seiler told the outlet. “What kills all of us in the family is he knew how she felt and he does the same to his children?”
