The former Chicago police officer convicted of murdering Laquon McDonald has dropped his appeal in the case.
Jason Van Dyke was convicted in 2018 for the 2014 murder of the 17-year-old McDonald. The Black teenager was walking away from police and holding a knife when Van Dyke shot him 16 times, including as he lay on the ground dying.

Van Dyke was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for second-degree murder. He had filed an appeal, but requested to drop it Sept. 29, 2020, the Associated Press reported.
The ex-cop wanted to “move on with his life and move forward,” his attorney told the Chicago Tribune. An Illinois appellate judge granted Van Dyke’s drop request Friday, essentially wrapping up the criminal case against the ex-cop.
In October 2018, Van Dyke became the first Chicago cop convicted of an on-duty killing in 50 years. His shooting of McDonald, and the subsequent cover-up of the graphic dashboard camera video, led to political upheaval in Chicago City Hall.
