Hunters claim that their hobby helps them build discipline, boosts their adrenalin and balance, mentally relaxes them, keeps them fit, and improves their survival skills.
However, regardless of their experience and personal commitment to their safety, hunting comes with its risks, and accidents can and do happen.
An Australian hunter, Chris McSherry, 35, got a hole in his knee and an eight-inch gash below his bum after he was attacked by the buffalo he shot.
Chris noticed the animal in Port Bradshaw, just off the northeast coast of the Northern Territory, and shot two arrows at it. Yet, the buffalo escaped, so he followed the blood trail.
After a few hundred meters, Chris came across it ‘in a thick piece of bush’. He shot a few more bolts, and he was convinced he killed it. Yet, when he approached near to check it, the buffalo gored him twice!
The father-of-five explained:
“I managed to turn and get about three steps in before he was on my back and gored his horns into my upper thigh, pushing me forward. That’s when I hit the ground and he put the horns into me again, picked me up by the right leg, and flung me about three meters.
The buffalo left me with some decent wounds, there’s a Coke can-sized hole above the front of my knee and an eight-inch gash right under my bum.”
The animal died shortly after it, and the hunter was transported to Gove Hospital, and then to Darwin Hospital, to undergo surgery.
His partner, Elenie Bromot, shared a picture of McSherry in the back of an ambulance, and thanked people for their support in a Facebook post:
“Just wanted to give everyone an update, Chris McSherry is doing fine and is having surgery as we speak, thank you to everyone that has offered support to me and the girls and Ty, I am very grateful means a lot, and thank you to everyone that has gone to see if he is OK in Darwin hospital, I really appreciate you all as I cannot be there with him xoxo hopefully is home soon, will keep you updated [sic].”
Yet, Chris adds that he will get back to hunting as soon as he recovers:
“Buff is dead I’m alive (this time) and hope to be back with my family and friends soon thanks for all the well wishes on other posts I appreciate the love and support and will live to HUNT another day.”
Yet, in his 20 years of hunting, this was not the first time Chris got injured and avoided near death. Previously, he had been charged by a crocodile on a spearfishing trip.
