Australian couple Bronco Hoang, 25, and wife Katherine, 23, were out for a drive on September 28, when tragedy struck.
Bronco was a teaching his 17-year-old relative to drive in their Nissan Tiida, with his pregnant wife in the backseat, Daily Mirror reports. The college student was expecting twins with her husband.
But at 7:48 p.m., a man driving a Mazda 3 sped down the road in the wrong direction.
The driver, 29-year-old Richard Moananu, was traveling roughly 62 mph when he hit the Hoang’s car and several others.
Bronco went into a coma and woke in the hospital. That’s when he learned that the crash had tragically taken the lives of his wife, unborn children, and cousin.
His aunt, Pham Crawford, told The Daily Telegraph that he was in “complete shock and in so much pain”:
“He screamed so loudlyWhy Katherine? Please not the babies.’”
“He can’t stop crying and feels guilty he’s the only one who survived.”
Bronco suffered fractures to his ribs, leg, and face, but is expected to be okay.
Moananu, a father of four, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligence, and unlicensed driving.
He was going about 27 mph over the speed limit when the crash occurred.
The driver is currently not facing manslaughter charges for the deaths of the couple’s unborn twins, but family friend Lucy La hopes that will change. She said:
“We are upset as these babies were already part of the family and they did die in the accident. Unfortunately only two out of four lives were recognized.”
A GoFundMe has been started to help raise money for funeral arrangements. The campaign has raised over $48,000 so far.
