A dad-of-two allegedly stabbed his wife to death as his children desperately tried to save their mum during a horrific attack at the family home.
John Erickson, 41, has been charged with murder after Utahna Halona Erickson, also 41, was reportedly killed in front of their two kids Weston, 11, and Preslee, seven, in Salt Lake County, Utah.
He was also charged on Monday with child abuse and two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child.
Erickson is accused of repeatedly stabbing Utahna at their home in West Settlement Circle, Midvale, until she died, according to charge documents.
Daughter Preslee told police her mum screamed for help and ran into her bedroom before her dad stabbed her with a knife, charges state, according to Deseret News.
The schoolgirl had attempted to wrestle the blade from her dad, which reportedly left her with cuts to her fingers that “required surgery”.
Weston, meanwhile, kicked and punched his dad before running to a neighbour’s home for help.
“It was my dad that made it happen,” he later told officers.
Police found Utahna had already died when they arrived at the scene on October 28.
Blood was said to be splattered around the room with Erickson found on the bed after attempting to take his own life, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.
Preslee had “blood on her face and clothes, and severe cuts on her hand”, reports People magazine.
The accused allegedly said “she’s dead” and “I meant for that”, before explaining he had “snapped”, as officers treated his wounds.
Court documents say Erickson added: “One of the sweetest people around took the brunt of my rage.”
Utahna’s mum Shirlee Silversmith released a family statement in the days after her death, describing how they are “at a loss and our hearts have been crushed”.
“She made everything beautiful and always went out of her way to bring family and friends together,” they continued.
“She was taken from us way too soon in a way that we will never understand.”Erickson – who has no previous criminal record – was treated at hospital before being taken to Salt Lake County Jail.
He is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing later today (November 12).
