College Student Thought a ‘Ghost’ Lived Inside Her Closet — Until One Day She Found a Man in Her Clothes

A University of North Carolina college student said she and her roommates thought they heard a ghost in their apartment until they uncovered the truth.

A young woman, who’s only been identified as Maddie, told Fox 8 reporters she heard noises coming from her closet. She recalled:

“I just hear rattling in my closet. It sounded like a raccoon in my closet.”

The college junior even saw handprints on the bathroom wall of her off-campus apartment in Greensboro. On Saturday, she decided to look into the situation and was surprised to find a man living inside her closet and dressed in her clothes. Maddie said:

“I’m like who’s there? And somebody answers me.

He’s likeoh, my name is Drew.’ I open the door and he’s in there, wearing all of my clothes. My socks. My shoes. And he has a book bag full of my clothes.”

The student immediately contacted the police and talked to the man sitting on the floor in an attempt to distract him while she waited for her boyfriend and authorities to arrive.

She said the intruder wasn’t violent or threatening.

Authorities identified the man as 30-year-old Andrew Swofford. Maddie said she thinks Swofford broke into her apartment before. She told WFMY, sometimes she would notice some of her belonging missing but blamed it on one of her roommates.

Maddie explained:

“We always joke that there’s a ghost in here because I’ve been missing clothes since I’ve been living here, like shirts – like a shirt at a time or pants at this time – it makes me think he’s been here before.”

The women aren’t sure how Swofford got inside the apartment but notified the building’s property managers. They said back in December she had the locks changed after she found two men in her living room.

Swofford was arrested and appeared in court. He’s being held on a $26,000 bond and was charged with 14 felony offenses including identity theft and larceny.

Maddie said she left the apartment immediately and signed a new lease.
