TikTok has given a voice to millions of people. With a reported 100 million users in the United States alone, the Chinese have created a social media platform that has engaged about as many people as voted in the 2020 presidential election. Now, TikTok has revived a 2011 movie called Megan Is Missing, which is banned in many countries around the world, including New Zealand. The film, which was marketed as an educational movie, was nothing of the sort, and because it looked to exploit people, it was banned in progressive cultures.
Now, Megan Is Missing has found new life on the Chinese-created TikTok platform. The terrifying film has been shared on the app and has been viewed more than 11 million times since it was uploaded. TikTok user “Aleigh.Ander” uploaded the alarming content along with her reaction, which transforms from scared to concerned in a matter of moments.
Other people jumped onto the latest TikTok trend. One user, “Bella_Clare” uploaded her facial expressions before, during, and after watching Megan Is Missing. As you might guess, Bella’s facial expression grow more and more disturbed and concerned as she progresses through the alarming film.
Many other people, who are trying to get “TikTok famous,” uploaded their reactions to the scary movie. However, one person urged other people to heed New Zealand’s warning and skip the movie altogether due to its terrifying content.
“If you are thinking of watching Megan is Missing, please don’t,” user @lilnutmegg wrote in a post. “I love horror/thriller/murder mysteries, and I can watch them very easily, but this one I will never ever forget. I couldn’t even finish it.”
Now the Megan Is Missing is trending on TikTok, the movie’s writer/director, Michael Goi, launched a public service announcement on TikTok to warn people about the film’s disturbing nature.
“I got a text from Amber Perkins, the lead actress in my movie, that it was exploding on TikTok at the moment, and I didn’t get to give YouTube customary warnings that I used to give people before they watched Megan is Missing,” he said.
Goi warned people to avoid the movie unless they had the support and were watching it in the middle of the day.
“Do not watch the movie in the middle of the night. Do not watch the movie alone,” he continued. “And if you see the words’ photo number one’ pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie if you’re already kind of freaking out before you start seeing things you maybe don’t want to see.”
No matter what the Chinese-created TikTok wants you to think, Megan Is Missing is NOT a true story. It is entirely fictional and created simply to scare people.
The movie is about a popular high school student, Megan Stewart, who meets a “boy” online only to go missing. Because her friend was alarmed by this, the movie is her best friend investigating her friend’s disappearance.
