A BABYSITTER has been charged with assaulting a young mom then abandoning her infant in a dumpster.
Andiana Velez, 24, faces multiple charges after the alleged assault and dumping of the baby girl.
The eight-month-old baby girl was found with burned hands, “shivering and crying” in the trash outside an apartment complex in New Haven, Connecticut.
Connecticut police have since arrested and charged babysitter Velez in connection with the infant in the trash.
Police allege Velez assaulted the baby’s 21-year-old mother earlier that day during an argument at a gas station, before dumping and deserting the infant in a dumpster.
RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT
Velez faces charges of risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
It was only when one of the building’s tenants heard crying as he was throwing out his trash that the baby was discovered on Monday afternoon (October 12).
Tenant Perry Dennis heard crying from the dumpster and initially thought it was a cat before seeing the baby.
“It just shocked me,” he told local media.
“She was shivering and crying. I immediately saw the hands. Both hands were burnt, but the right hand especially.
“It’s still in my mind how somebody can do something like that.”
She was shivering like crazy.
Rick Chardon
He immediately got a blanket and alerted the apartment complex’s maintenance team, who were able to rescue the tot from the trash.
“She was shivering like crazy when I got her in my arms,” maintenance worker Rick Chardon told local media.
“Total disregard for life. I’ll never forget it. She just has been through a lot of trauma.”
