In a horrific crime, a Texas man has been charged with murdering a 10-month-old baby after allegedly leaving her in a backpack in his car.
Trevor Rowe, 27, was arrested by the Lubbock Police Department earlier this month and is currently being held on capital murder charges and a $2 million bond.
Rowe had allegedly picked up 10-month-old Marion Rebecca Jester-Montoya from his girlfriend’s house (he is not the baby’s father) and drove her to his job site. Before heading into work, police allege that Rowe stuffed the baby into a backpack and left it on the car floor.
Rowe allegedly checked on the baby throughout the day, even putting her back into the backpack after she had gotten out at one point. At lunchtime, Rowe ate and then put the backpack in the trunk of his car. When he checked on her at the end of his shift, the baby was no longer breathing.
Police say that he attempted CPR, but when paramedics arrived, they rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The family has set up a fundraiser called #Justice4Marion to raise money for her funeral costs. “Marion Rebecca Montoya was just 1 month and 3 days shy of turning 1 and was killed on 1/7/20. This was a tragic event that could have been prevented,” the family wrote on Facebook.
has not yet entered a plea on the charges.
When I’m not hanging out with my three-year-old and husband in Brooklyn, I’m busy writing stories for Mamas Uncut and managing PR + Marketing for Magnolia Bakery, based in New York City. On weekends, you can usually find me at a local park or playground pushing my daughter on the swings, “researching” the best almond croissants in Park Slope or launching into impromptu family dance parties at home, the sidewalk or, every once in awhile, a restaurant bathroom. I’m still trying to master the whole parenting thing, but I have learned that copious amounts of coffee, humor and humility are involved on a daily basis.
