Police are hunting for leads in the death of a North Carolina teen whose body was found in a Bojangles parking lot over the weekend.
Veronica Lee Baker, 17, was discovered dead inside a vehicle outside the fast food chain on Jones Sausage Road near Interstate 40 on Saturday evening, according to a Raleigh Police news release. She’d been shot to death, according to NBC affiliate WRAL-TV. Police, who have released little information in the case, are investigating her death as a homicide.
Authorities responded to an emergency call at 8:18 p.m. on Aug. 15 and later found the Raleigh teenager unresponsive in her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness, who had first notified authorities, told them the vehicle was running when Baker was found.
“There’s a car with the doors wide open and a girl that’s unresponsive,” the male caller told emergency dispatchers, according to audio of the 911 call obtained by Oxygen.com. “It doesn’t look like they’re breathing. … She’s not breathing. I tried to shake her and everything else and no response or nothing.”
A number of squad cars could be seen sealing off the parking lot with police tape on Saturday evening, according to local media. Police haven’t released a possible motive in the 17-year-old’s suspected slaying. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
The Raleigh Police Department declined to further comment on the case Monday.
Baker’s friends have since memorialized her on social media.
“One of my friends Veronica Baker is dead,” Lamont Whitaker wrote on Facebook. “She was a good worker and a better friend. I enjoyed every convo we had and she made me laugh. Love you Veronica. I’ll miss you forever.”
Others urged those who may have information related to Baker’s death to come forward.
“Catch her killer,” Lori Rhew also posted. “Someone knows something!! Do the right thing & make the anonymous call!!”
Investigators are also encouraging anyone with information related to Baker’s murder to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers at 919-834-4357 or by submitting an anonymous tip online.
